Spotlight Indexing
If a USB memory stick or hard drive is plugged into an Apple computer running OSX then it is likely that the system will have automatically created a folder called Spotlight-V100. By default, the folder also exists on the system drive itself.
The Spotlight-V100 folder contains reates an index of all files and folders present on the device.
The Spotlight application was introduced in OSX Tiger in April 2005 and allows faster searching of files, including documents, music, images, applications and systen preferences and information on the device by the Apple system.
The Spotlight-V100 folder includes file names and paths, file sizes, file modification and creation dates and file types.
By default, all location information and search activity is sent to Apple through the Spotlight application with a unique identifying code, this information is then shared with the Bing search engine and is so that it can provide relevant suggestions to the user as the searches are entered/typed.
The data sharing aspect of the SpotLight software can be disabled through deselecting the ‘Spotlight Suggestions Bing Web Searches’ option within the Spotlight menu of System Preferences.
