What is Surveillanceware?
Surveillanceware is a type of spware that allows a remote user to access the camera and microphone of a mobile phone. It is also capable of accessing communication, such as SMS and chat messages.
Exodus Surveillanceware Explained
Exodus is one type of surveillanceware software that is believed to be able to compromise Android and iOS devices and has been identified on Google Play Store.
The Exodus surveillanceware application can also be used to extract audio recordings, contacts, video and photographs from a device as well as access location information.
The iOS versions of the Exodus surveillanceware application were identified through phishing websites, however, they were not identified within the App Store.
Whilst the iOS version of Exodus surveillanceware is understood not to be as capable as that on Android, it can still record audio on an iPhone without the user being aware.
Whilst the developers of the Exodus surveillanceware were able to make the malware available via the Google Store, they were not able to gain the same access to the App Store.
Instead, the developers of Exodus surveillanceware misued an Enterprise Certificate issued by Apple, that has since been revoked, meaning that it should not now be able to infect an up to date iPhone if it has not already been compromised.
