What is the User Dictionary File?
A user dictionary file allows the device to provide predictive text and autocorrect fuctions within different applications.
The dictionary file can include standard dictionary words as well as words that have been typed by the user. These user typed words can include usernames, passwords and any other non-standard words that are not normally included within the dictionary and have been marked for ‘special attention’.
The user dictionary file within an iOS device is located at the following path by default:
/private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/dynamic-text.dat
The user dictionary file contains the terms in plain text and normally in the order in which they have been typed and stored. There is no time/date to identify when particular specific terms were stored, however, there may be a creation and modified date associated to the file which can indicate the period over which the terms were stored.
When a word is stored to the user dictionary, the autocorrect feature accepts those words as correct spellings, meaning that any words the user types that do not form part of the standard dictionary are not automatically corrected by the phone.
The user dictionary can be reset on an Apple iOS based device via the Settings\General\Reset\Reset Keyboard Dictionary\ menus. The confirm the device passcode and select ‘reset’. All manually typed and stored non-standard dictionary words will then be removed from the device.
